Modelling Base Plate of a Windmill and Performing Finite Element Analysis

A Brief Synopsis

Our consultancy of mechanical engineering students has been tasked by Enercon to put forward the design of a new tower for their onshore 9.25 MW wind turbine. The goal is to design and optimize the tower for minimum weight using Fintie Element Analysis. While other team members worked on optimizing the tower, I worked on the base plate mounting for the tower. To model the structure, ANSYS Mechanical and Design Modeler are used. The criteria for the base is to have a factor of safety of 1.65 for the structure and 6 for the bolt connections and welds. After passing through 4 design iterations, the final design is selected and presented.
